Judging

The Yorkshire Post Rural Awards are judged independently by a selected panel of industry experts.

Our judges so far:


Charles Mills, Yorkshire Agricultural Society

York farmer Charles Mills was appointed as Show Director of the Great Yorkshire Show and its sister event, Countryside Live in 2015.
He farms at Woolas Grange, Appleton Roebuck which is a mixed arable rotation.Charles has held a number of roles within the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, including Joint Chief Cattle Steward and as a member of the Society’s Council, its governing body, since 2002.
Charles has played a significant role in the educational aspect of the Society’s work, serving on its Grants and Education Committee and running arable workshops at the free Countryside Days which attract 6,000 primary school children every year. He is also a member of the management committee of the Society’s Future Farmers of Yorkshire.


Sophie Mccandlish, The Yorkshire Post

Editor of the Country Week Platform within Saturday’s Yorkshire Post, Many years of experience working with a variety of Yorkshire based Rural businesses and campaigning for a variety of agricultural matters.

Sophie  grew up working on her own parents farm!


Chris Berry

Chris Berry has written about farming and the countryside for over thirty years and for the Yorkshire Post for twenty-five years. Chris edited the Farming in Yorkshire magazine and has been a specialist feature writer on the Yorkshire Post’s Country Week since it started in 2004. He also raised over £150,000 for charity through his concert creation The Singing Farmers that ran for 13 years. Chris is also the official commentator on the sheep classes at the Great Yorkshire Show.


Emma Ryan, Senior Reporter, The Yorkshire Post

Emma is a senior reporter with the Yorkshire Post and having spent many years living and working in Whitby and the surrounding areas is looking after The Country Week section on a Saturday with a keen interest in rural communities being sustainable and the art of how to train sheepdogs…
